4. Bulk sending of ads to millions of websites or email addresses - this is spam and carries penalties such as inprisonment or a fine or losing your internet connection. Most people on these lists never even opted in to receive ads - and the awful people behind these would have ’scraped’ email addresses using automated means scouring the internet.

Once you start negotiating, make sure you send all correspondence to your creditor through certified mail with return receipt, and always keep copies of everything you send and receive. Also, document any telephone conversations you may have with the creditor.

Be patient and expect the process to take time; it can take anywhere from 3 to 9 months to reach an agreement on a debt settlement.

Once a mutually acceptable settlement amount is agreed upon, insist that you receive a copy of the agreement in writing before you make a payment. Be sure to ask the creditor to state in writing that they will never sell your forgiven debt to another party. This is important, because if they do that, you will then have a junk debt buyer harassing you for the remainder of the balance on that account.

You may wish to hire a professional debt settlement company if you would rather not negotiate with your creditors yourself. If you choose this option, don’t hire a debt settlement service without investigating them carefully first to make sure they are legitimate.
